Ben Boteler began working in the Ocean Governance Team in January 2018. He is conducting research in an effort to advance and strengthen regional ocean governance for the high seas (areas beyond national jurisdiction) in the South East Atlantic and South East Pacific as well as globally. In particular, his focus is on the socioeconomic uses and benefits obtained from the marine environment. He is the co-lead of the STRONG High Seas project (Strengthening Regional Ocean Governance for the High Seas), a project that facilitates the development of comprehensive, cross-sectoral approaches to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the high seas.

Prior to joining RIFS he was a Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute in Berlin, Germany where he focused on European marine socioeconomics and policy. He has an MA in political science and economics from Philipps University in Marburg, Germany and an MA in visual and media anthropology from the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
