Ben Boteler arbeitet seit Januar 2018 im Ocean Governance Team. Er forscht zum Thema Förderung und Stärkung der regionalen Meeresgovernance in Meeresgebieten außerhalb der nationalen Hoheitsgebiete im Südostatlantik und Südostpazifik sowie weltweit. Sein Schwerpunkt liegt insbesondere auf dem sozioökonomischen Nutzen und Vorteilen, die sich aus der Meeresumwelt ergeben. Er ist Co-Leiter des STRONG High Seas-Projekts (Stärkung der regionalen Governance für die Hohe See), ein Projekt, das die Entwicklung umfassender, sektorübergreifender Ansätze zur Erhaltung und nachhaltigen Nutzung der biologischen Vielfalt auf hoher See ermöglicht.
Bevor er zum RIFS kam, war er Senior Fellow am Ecologic Institut in Berlin, Deutschland, wo er zu den Themen europäische marine Sozioökonomie und Politik arbeitete. Er hat einen Master in Politikwissenschaft und Wirtschaftswissenschaften von der Philipps-Universität in Marburg und einen Master in visueller Anthropologie und Medienanthropologie von der Freien Universität in Berlin.
