Barbara Neumann ist Geographin und leitet seit September 2022 die Forschungsgruppe Governance der Ozeane am RIFS. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich Gesellschaft-Umwelt-Interaktionen, nachhaltige Entwicklung und (Umwelt-) Governance von Meeres- und Küstengebieten. Sie beschäftigt sich unter anderem mit der Frage, wie Governance-Prozesse gestaltet und unterstützt werden können, dass sie nachhaltige Ansätzen befördern und den stetig wachsenden Herausforderungen begegnen können. Ihre Forschung ist transdisziplinär und transformativ ausgerichtet und richtet den Blick insbesondere auf die Schnittstelle Wissenschaft, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft. Barbara Neumann war von 1997 bis 2010 am Lehrstuhl für Physische Geographie und Umweltforschung an der Universität des Saarlandes als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin tätig und hat 2002 in Geographie promoviert. Von 2010 bis 2017 war sie Mitglied des Exzellenzcluster „Ozean der Zukunft" in Kiel und als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Arbeitsgruppe Meeresspiegelanstieg und Küstengefährdung am Geographischen Institut der Universität Kiel beschäftigt. Hier forschte und lehrte sie zu den Themen Klimawandel, Meeresspiegelanstieg und Nachhaltigkeit und Governance von Küstenregionen. Seit Juni 2017 ist sie am jetzigen RIFS (vormals Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, IASS) tätig.
