Prof. Dr. Dr. Barbara Adam, FAcSS, FLSW ist emeritierte Professorin an der Cardiff University Wales, in England. „Soziale Zeit" war während ihrer akademischen Karriere das geistige Hauptprojekt, welches eine einzigartige Perspektive ermöglichte und bahnbrechende Publikationen zu diesem Thema hervorbrachte. Daraus entstanden fünf Forschungs-Monografien, fünf editierte Bücher und eine große Anzahl von Artikeln, mit denen sie danach strebt, „Zeit" in das Zentrum der sozialen und sozio-ökologischen Analysen zu rücken. Zwei ihrer Bücher wurden mit Buchpreisen ausgezeichnet und sie hat sich erfolgreich um zahlreiche sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungsstipendien beworben. Sie hatte Fellowships in Italien und Großbritannien, die Max-Weber-Professur an der Universität München und das renommierte ESRC-Professorenstipendium (2003-2007) inne, durch welche sie sich explizit auf die sozialen Beziehungen der Zukunft konzentrieren konnte. 1992 gründete sie die Zeitschrift Time & Society, die sie zehn Jahre lang redigierte und bei welcher sie immer noch als beratende Redakteurin unterstützend mitwirkt. Ihre Arbeiten werden in den verschiedenen Bereichen der Geisteswissenschaften bis hin zu den Sozial- und Umweltwissenschaften gelesen und gelehrt.
